Partnership Between PKP CARGO Group and Panattoni in the Czech Republic

Wizualizacja Wizualizacja

PKP CARGO International, a member of the PKP CARGO Group, has signed a cooperation agreement with Panattoni for the implementation of the new Panattoni Smart Park Karviná industrial project. This is an important step toward revitalizing post-industrial areas and developing sustainable transport in the Moravian-Silesian region, which has received support from the local community.

Key Cooperation – A New Impulse for Industry and Transport

Under the cooperation agreement signed on May 28, 2025, the parties agreed on joint actions including:

  • connecting Panattoni Smart Park Karviná to the national railway network,
  • constructing a new siding, on which PKP CARGO International will operate as the railway operator,
  • providing mutual support in administrative and investment processes.

This partnership is another step toward developing modern logistics infrastructure in the key region of Ostrava and Karviná. Our rail network and our railway station will become the foundation of sustainable and efficient freight transport for the new industrial park - Agnieszka Wasilewska-Semail, President of the Management Board of PKP CARGO S.A. in restructuring.

Revitalization with a Vision for the Future

Panattoni Smart Park Karviná is a project located on the site of the former Barbora coal mine. It involves the construction of modern industrial and warehouse halls with complete infrastructure, parking areas and administrative facilities.

The decarbonization process in the Czech Republic is progressing very dynamically, which poses challenges for the freight transport sector. The closure of industrial facilities means a need to find new purposes for railway infrastructure. Our involvement in this project is proof that we can act effectively and flexibly – so that rail transport does not disappear from the map, even when economic conditions change. The key is openness, a partnership-based approach and a broad perspective on the potential for cooperation with both private investors and local authorities. We hope that similar projects will soon be implemented in Poland as well - Agnieszka Wasilewska-Semail, President of the Management Board of PKP CARGO S.A. in restructuring.

PKP CARGO International, headquartered in nearby Ostrava, Czech Republic, will be a key transport partner for this investment. The implementation of the project symbolizes the economic transformation of the entire region. The company will provide comprehensive planning and transport services for future park tenants, supporting the development of a sustainable supply chain and modern transport infrastructure.

Through such investments, as the PKP Group, we demonstrate that the revitalization of post-industrial areas can go hand in hand with the dynamic development of logistics. This project is a good example of how to restore value to places undergoing transformation, giving them new economic and social life. We are pleased to use our experience, infrastructure and potential to help make this project a model of development for the entire region - Alan Beroud, President of the Management Board of PKP S.A.

A Regionally Significant Investment

Authorities of the Moravian-Silesian region emphasize that Panattoni Smart Park Karviná fits perfectly into their strategy for revitalizing post-mining areas.

Connecting a railway siding to the Panattoni Smart Park Karviná complex is of great importance to us. It will enable the use of rail – one of the most environmentally friendly means of transport – in daily operations, which will significantly reduce the environmental impact of this activity in the region - Petr Janeček, Project Manager, Panattoni.

Additionally, during public consultations held in March and April of this year, over 70% of Karviná residents expressed support for the investment. The project is seen as an opportunity for new jobs, improved infrastructure and stimulation of the local economy.

The PKP Group actively participates in projects aimed at revitalizing post-industrial and railway areas, supporting the development of local communities – also just beyond our southern border. This approach aligns perfectly with our mission of acting in the spirit of ESG. We are not only building a modern railway but also bringing life back to places that are thus gaining a new role in the social and economic environment - Alan Beroud, President of PKP S.A.

The Panattoni Smart Park Karviná investment is being developed on the site of the former coal mine in Karviná and covers approximately 150,000 m² of modern industrial space. The project includes the creation of up to 2,000 new jobs and will be carried out with respect for sustainable development principles – including the installation of photovoltaic panels, water retention systems and obtaining a BREEAM certification at the “Excellent” level. The project is currently in the environmental permitting phase. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with the first facilities to be completed in 2027.
