DACHSER, one of the world’s leading logistics providers, has introduced partial automation of the display construction process at its logistics center in Berlin Brandenburg. This is the first solution of its kind within the company’s global network and a direct response to the growing expectations of customers in the retail sector, especially the food industry.
The new automated production line enables fast, consistent, and reliable assembly of promotional displays on CHEP quarter pallets. Previously, this process was entirely manual, requiring significant labor input and making it difficult to maintain consistent quality. Today, 90% of the displays leaving the Schönefeld warehouse are assembled with minimal physical labor, thanks to a state-of-the-art 43-meter-long production line.
The Berlin Brandenburg logistics center produces over 150,000 displays annually, which are delivered to the largest retail chains in Germany and abroad. Automation not only shortens order fulfillment times but also allows for flexible responses to seasonal demand fluctuations.
Tailor-Made Technology
This innovative solution was developed in cooperation with Italian system manufacturer Tosa. Importantly, the project was not based on an off-the-shelf model – the system was specifically designed for DACHSER, taking into account the company’s operational specifics and the individual needs of its clients.
The project was initiated and coordinated by the Contract Logistics Consulting department in collaboration with the Technology Solutions team. A key contribution came from Maximilian Ludwig - a young specialist who co-developed the concept for the automated system as part of his master’s thesis. His involvement served as a catalyst for the implementation of this innovation.
Integration with the Mikado System
The automated line is fully integrated with DACHSER’s proprietary warehouse management system - Mikado. This ensures that all processes - from receiving components, through assembly, to dispatch preparation - are digitally coordinated and monitored in real time. This provides maximum transparency and full control over the supply chain.
A Step Toward the Future
Automation in Schönefeld is part of DACHSER’s broader strategy focused on innovation and sustainable development. The company continues to invest in solutions that enhance operational efficiency, improve workplace ergonomics, and reduce the physical burden on staff.
The new automated line in Schönefeld is a milestone in the development of our contract logistics services. We are increasing efficiency, improving quality, and creating a more sustainable working environment - emphasized R. Michael Mayer, Department Head CL Consulting at DACHSER.
The project also reflects a development strategy based on interdisciplinary collaboration and support for young talent. Notably, automation does not imply job cuts – on the contrary, DACHSER is committed to retraining its teams and involving employees in more specialized and supervisory roles.
