DHL Inaugurates the Automation System at the DHL Health Logistics Campus of Livraga

DHL Supply Chain Italy officially launched the automation system at the Health Logistics Campus of Livraga (Lodi). In a dedicated area of over 7,000 sq m, 138 robots ensure top-level automation performance thanks to the Skypod® Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) from Exotec, currently serving two key Customers in the LSH sector: Viatris and DOC Pharma.

DHL Supply Chain Italy has started an investment of over 14 million euros to equip the Livraga Campus with an innovative high-automation system, enhancing the Life Sciences & Healthcare sector, which is crucial for Italy. The objective is to develop increasingly efficient, integrated, and technologically advanced logistics infrastructures, in line with the standards of the Group's global network. Among the innovations introduced in the last years in Italy, the use of collaborative robotics stands out, allowing to improve productivity, reduce errors, and enhance operational flexibility in a sector where precision, safety, and traceability are fundamental requirements.

Livraga Campus is part of the strategic district of South Milan, which also includes pharma logistics. We made the DHL Health Logistics Campus of Livraga one of the nerve centers of our network to provide our Customers and patients with innovative solutions through advanced technology - states Antonio Lombardo, President and CEO of DHL Supply Chain Italy. - Today, Italy plays a central role in European healthcare logistics, and we are proud to have been the first, together with our Customers - Viatris and DOC Pharma - to develop a large-scale application of good-to-person technology. After successfully integrating collaborative Locus robots into our operational sites for several years, we are now also innovating our solution offerings, such as the introduction of RFID technology for immediate control of pharmaceutical products, enabling real-time tracking to ensure our Customers receive truly excellent service quality.

The Carbon Neutral Campus, inaugurated in 2021, takes up 50,000 sq m in a strategic location near A1, one of northern Italy's main transportation routes. The area employs over 300 highly specialized people in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors and can accommodate up to 60,000 pallets of pharmaceutical and biomedical products. It is designed to handle various pharmaceutical specialties and classes, with specific temperature and safety requirements: it is climate-controlled at 15-25°C and provided with two temperature-controlled room (2-8°C and 18-25°C), a segregation area, a pharmaceutical workshop, and a bunker for flammable products with two temperature ranges (4-8°C and 15-25°C).

This system allows to reduce errors, optimize space through increased storage density, and improve efficiency, speed, and flexibility depending on seasonal demands, adapting capacities during peak periods.

The automation technology also promotes female employment, with over 60% of the workforce comprising women. It alleviates strenuous tasks, enabling staff to focus on high-value activities, enhancing job attractiveness and retention.

Thanks to intelligent solutions and advanced digital systems, the facility quickly adapts to demand fluctuations, supporting the distribution of pharmaceuticals and medical devices while sticking to strict quality standards. This technology strengths Italy's strategic role within the global DHL Health Logistics network, contributing to the advancement of international healthcare logistics.
