Report “Who needs motorways?”

Report prepared by On Board PR Ecco Network based on public opinion research conducted by PBS DGA on a randomly selected, representative sample of adult residents of Poland.

Currently, an intensive process of modernization and construction of communication and transport routes is underway in Poland. The Ministry of Infrastructure reports almost daily on investments being implemented in our country’s transport network. The media also regularly cover topics related to the construction of new projects, especially motorways. The frequency of this information increases with the approaching date of the start of Euro 2012, as well as problems with the construction of subsequent sections of roads or railway lines.

The results of the study confirm that the most important area of transport infrastructure for Poles that requires modernization is roads – 3/4 of respondents indicate this area as requiring the largest investment outlays in the coming years. Interestingly, Poles, regardless of their place of residence, pointed primarily to the need to invest in the network of local roads and bypasses, because these are the ones they use on a daily basis. They attached less importance to the creation of motorways and expressways, although these were still important directions for the development of road infrastructure for them. As the second most important area for investment in Polish infrastructure, respondents indicated the railway. Although nearly 1/10 of the tracks are under modernization (in 2009, 20,300 km were in operation), over 62% of respondents consider the railway to be the second most important area for investment. The study also indicates that Poles consider improving the quality of connections to be a priority in this regard, rather than the need to modernize railway stations.

The report, developed on the basis of the research, indicates the areas of communication infrastructure requiring the largest investment outlays over the next 10 years according to Polish public opinion. It also contains a comparison to the state of transport infrastructure in the European Union.
