DHL Express, the global leader in the express services market, is introducing more transport aircraft to its air fleet. On September 22, the first flight from Leipzig to New York took place. Six Boeing 767ERFs, operated by DHL Air (UK), will allow for the further development of timely transatlantic services. The 767ERFs will replace the previously used MD-11F freighters, which were utilized as part of the DHL Express joint venture with Lufthansa Cargo.
Trade turnover on transatlantic routes has remained at a high level in recent years; in 2008, the value of trade flows between the European Union and the USA amounted to 347 billion USD. The company’s volume value in transatlantic express shipments maintained a high level even during the economic slowdown.
With a payload of 59 tons and a maximum range of 6,025 km, the Boeing 767 ERF is widely recognized as one of the most modern medium-range wide-body cargo aircraft. Its range allows for direct flights between East Midlands in the UK and Cincinnati and New York, as well as between DHL Express’s main European hub in Leipzig and New York. These flights will contribute to further improving international connections with the network in the United States and will enable the expansion of services on transatlantic routes between the US East Coast and Europe. DHL is the first company in Europe to introduce this type of aircraft following their certification by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Comparing this model with the one previously used on transatlantic routes, the new Boeing 767 ERF consumes 53% less fuel per flight and emits 53% less CO2. The introduction of Boeing 767 ERF aircraft into the DHL fleet is part of the implementation of the global Deutsche Post DHL strategy – GoGreen. Its goal is to reduce CO2 emissions resulting from the operations of DHL and its subcontractors by 30% by the year 2020.
