Modeling of rack components in computer-aided structural analysis – part 3
Another method for determining the effective cross-sectional characteristics of the profiles in question is the computer-aided method. In some more complex cases, the author of the article uses it to verify the results obtained by the analytical method.
It is free from the drawbacks that characterize the experimental method. Furthermore, by using the same computer model of the profile, one can determine bending stiffness, torsional stiffness, as well as the position of the center of gravity and the shear center, and the value of the effective cross-sectional area. This method itself is very accurate, but unfortunately, it does not take into account the dimensional tolerances of the profile or the perforation. Below, the methods for determining these values will be briefly discussed using a profile as an example.
