Symbol Technologies Inc. has introduced a second-generation mobile RFID reader called the RD5000. The reader can
be installed on forklifts, pallet trucks, packing machines, and other equipment used in materials management. Thanks to its small size, the device can be used in space-constrained areas. The reader provides customers with better inventory control across all segments of the supply chain, as it allows for the expansion of RFID technology beyond loading docks. The device, together with the vehicle-mounted Symbol VC5090 computer, forms an integrated
solution that enables drivers to register goods receipts and movements faster. Combining the advantages of the RD5000 reader and the VC5090 computer allows for streamlining the movement of goods within the supply chain and monitoring products, pallets, and fixed assets
at various stages of that chain. The mobile RFID reader can operate without cables, as it is equipped with a built-in antenna enabling the use of Bluetooth and wireless network connections. These features, along with the use of the Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 operating system, simplify the installation, maintenance, and integration of the reader with existing processes and networks. The model is also compatible
with the radio network system being prepared by Symbol, called Wi-NG (Wireless Next Generation), which will make it easier for enterprises to deploy increasingly popular radio networks and manage them from a single, central point.
