Creating an electronic signature and its role in e-logistics

Until October 11, 2001, e-logistics used in the operational activities of Polish enterprises included the widely known Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) technology, but without the use of electronic signature capabilities.

From that date, a new reality for Polish e-logistics began. Currently, a paper document can be completely replaced by an electronic document. However, for it to be equivalent to a paper document, it must meet the appropriate requirements set by the legislator and, subsequently, by the European Parliament. Two basic features of an electronic document and signature are cited here: confidentiality and reliability. The possibilities for using electronic signature technology are very broad and relate not only, as is commonly believed, to transactions concluded over the Internet (this refers to business-to-consumer – B2C and business-to-business – B2B transactions) but also to the broadly understood issues of Computer Aided Logistics (CAL), Fig. 1. Systems of this type fulfill the following specific functions in e-logistics: planning and scheduling, tactical-operational coordination, control, record-keeping, settlements (with the bank, tax office, Social Insurance Institution – ZUS), IT communication (EDI, SAI), and simulation and visualization of processes (synoptic packages). Two cases in the operational activities of an enterprise are described below, which aim to illustrate the essence of the electronic signature.

The article comes from the magazine “Logistyka” 2002/1.
