Electronic signature

A digital signature, referred to by lawyers as an electronic signature, is created using cryptographic techniques. A digital signature is a string of bits dependent on the message being signed and the person signing the document.

It should be characterized by at least the same strength and effectiveness as a handwritten signature. Digital signature algorithms are designed based on a selected cipher, which forms the basis for creating a so-called asymmetric cryptographic system. In such a system, a pair of keys is associated with each user: a key for signing messages and a key for verifying the signature. The message signing key is secret, known only to the individual, while the signature verification key is publicly available (perhaps available to a limited extent, e.g., within a given institution or company). The signature of a message is the message cryptographically transformed using the secret key. Signature verification is performed by transforming it using the public key.
