The use of new technologies in Polish companies – results of the National Institute of Telecommunications research

In 2005, the National Institute of Telecommunications conducted a survey of corporate Internet users, the aim of which was to determine the extent to which Polish companies that already have Internet access use new technologies. The research focused on the following issues:
• ways of using computers in companies, employee access to company computers, and the impact of computerization on company operations
• ways of using the Internet in companies, employee access to the Internet, the impact of introducing the Internet to companies on their operations, company websites, and individual employee access to webmail
• methods of business communication and the use of mobile telephony in companies
• demand for public electronic services for businesses, the use of these services, and the assessment of the quality of their provision.
The survey was conducted online. Information about the companies surveyed was taken from the “Polish Companies 2005” database. Companies from all over Poland were examined. 4,518 completed questionnaires were received.
Research
The survey was anonymous. Representatives of the surveyed companies were asked to provide company attributes such as: size (number of employees), field of activity, legal status, financial condition, voivodeship (company headquarters), and the size and status of the town where the company is located. As a result of the research, a nationwide report was created, containing summary statements in the form of charts and statistical analyses measured by the Pearson linear correlation coefficient.
This article presents summary statements in the form of tables, which show the percentage of respondents’ answers to selected questions.
Using computers
Respondents were asked about the use of computers, access to them, the effects of company computerization, and plans to purchase computers. Company computers are most often used to support various types of office work (96%). Their role as a tool for accessing the Internet is equally important (95%). Computers are least often used for activities such as: software development (16%) and employee training (21%). In the vast majority of companies (74.5%), more than half of the employees used computers. The fewest responses (6.9%) were recorded among companies where 11 – 25% of employees had access to computers. Companies rate the impact of introducing computers on their operational efficiency very positively. Respondents replied that the introduction of computers had become essential for the functioning of companies (69.1%). Opinions that computers had not brought about any changes appeared rarely (2.2%). Most of the surveyed companies are thinking about purchasing new computers (72.4%). Only 11% of respondents have no such plans; most often explaining this by a lack of need (49.8%) or financial problems (35.1%).
