The influence of sampling frequency of operational loads on fatigue life calculation results

Fatigue life calculations for structural components under random loading conditions are performed using load spectra derived from the processing of operational load measurements. General principles related to the recording of stress (strain) variation histories have been defined in the literature. The proposed topic of this paper addresses the question: what is the minimum sampling frequency that can be adopted when measuring operational loads of structural components, and what is the impact of the sampling frequency on the character of the load spectrum, and consequently, on the results of fatigue life calculations? The answer to these questions will be presented using the example of an operational load history of a passenger car steering knuckle recorded under specific vehicle operating conditions.
INFLUENCE OF THE SAMPLING FREQUENCY OF OPERATIONAL LOADINGS ON FATIGUE LIFE CALCULATION RESULTS
Fatigue life calculation of machine design components in random loading conditions are performed with the usage of loading spectra being a result of elaboration of operational loading tests. General rules connected with recording of stress (strain) change courses were defined in references.
The proposed topic of the paper is connected with the following question: what minimum sampling frequency can be assumed during operational loads of machine components and what is the influence of the sampling frequency on loading spectrum character, and as a consequence on fatigue life calculation results?
The answer on the questions will be presented on the example of operational load of a passenger car steering spindle recorded in specific conditions of motor traffic. (…)
