The increasing importance of inland navigation in the transport of cargo units necessitates cooperation with other intermodal transport subsystems. A prerequisite for effective cooperation is the creation of properly located and organized logistics bases. Such bases should be situated at transshipment hubs where a change of transport mode can take place.
In this case, an inland port should have a direct connection with rail and road transport. As the potential for the development of inland navigation continues to grow in a unifying Europe, inland shipowners are forced to use complex systems that require, among other things, the use of advanced information transmission methods. These actions are aimed at increasing the efficiency of managing the fleet of transport units. The presentation of development trends in the field of telematics support for the management of river transport fleets is the subject of this article.
Transport telematics – formal definitions
Telematics is the application of advanced telecommunications and information technologies in a given field of economic and social life. In this sense, we can speak of transport telematics (if the mentioned technologies are applied in the transport sector) or telematics in environmental protection, education, medicine, etc.
