Modern warehouses are built with the goal of optimizing the quantity and quality of goods storage. An issue that is very often neglected is the integration of the warehouse into a Security System. This article aims to introduce the issue of facility security from a systemic perspective. The concept of a Security System includes three interconnected main elements. The first component is physical protection, the next is technical protection, which includes mechanical security measures, and the final component is Electronic Security Systems.
For a warehouse to be secure, none of these components can be missing. Additionally, their relationships must be very balanced. A disruption in proportions can significantly worsen the level of security, and compensating for the deficiencies of one component with the others can be extremely costly.
Physical protection
This is carried out by people, with all the advantages and disadvantages of this solution. It is the physical security personnel who have the right to verify the identity of individuals, check the contents of bags being carried, and apprehend suspects. However, people are susceptible to the temptation of quick enrichment and possess many other flaws that can significantly paralyze the facility’s Security System.
Mechanical security measures
Usually understood as locks, bars, etc. In reality, they have a much broader spectrum. Mechanical security measures should also include structural partitions such as walls, ceilings, gate structures, etc. These determine the time a potential intruder needs to break into the warehouse and the specialized equipment required to overcome the obstacle.
Electronic security measures
In this case, the variety of solutions used is practically infinite. The most important and practically always encountered are the Intrusion and Robbery Alarm System (SSWN) and the Video Surveillance System (CCTV), however, depending on the needs and the property being protected, the following are also used:
– Theft Alarm System (SSK)
– Access Control and Time & Attendance System (ACC / RCP)
– Public Address System (PA)
– Guard Tour System (SKW)
Usually, a Fire Alarm System and systems responsible for extinguishing and smoke extraction are also built, but that is a topic for a separate article.
