ProLogis Research Group publishes report on energy efficiency of European warehouse facilities

ProLogis, the world’s leading provider of distribution facilities, announced the publication of a new research report titled “Measuring Sustainability: Assessing the Energy Efficiency of European Warehouse Facilities”.

The authors of the report argue that European legislative initiatives show a trend towards greater use of eco-friendly buildings with lower carbon emissions. The authors pay particular attention to Directive 2002/91/EC, which requires every property owner to obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), specifying the degree to which a building’s energy efficiency meets the minimum compliance standards established in the aforementioned directive.

– Building eco-friendly properties is increasingly recognized as a best practice in the supply chain management sector, and thus in the European warehouse space sector – said Leonard Sahling, Vice President of ProLogis Research Group. – Although a trend towards more eco-friendly buildings could already be seen in legislation, their users can now appreciate the real benefits of choosing such buildings, and this will certainly determine future decisions.

The authors of the report claim that in the coming years, companies operating in the European market will use building energy ratings in the process of selecting the most energy-efficient buildings, as well as in managing their carbon emissions. The report also shows that the eco-friendly features of buildings can contribute to significant savings – in one of the examples from the British market cited in the report, they reached as much as 230,000 – 335,000 pounds per year.

The authors of the report are Simon Cox, Vice President of Project Management and Director of Sustainability for ProLogis in the UK, and Lisa Graham, Vice President of European Research at ProLogis.
