The article presents preliminary studies on the performance properties of coatings applied by electro-spark deposition. The evaluation of performance properties was carried out based on microstructure observations, roughness measurements, and tribological tests. The studies were conducted using WC-Co-Al2O and WC-Co-Al2O33TiO electrodes, which were produced by sintering nanostructured powders. The anti-wear coatings were applied via electro-spark deposition onto C-steel samples using an EIL-8A device. Coatings of this type will increase the abrasive wear resistance of tools and machine components. The production of protective layers on machine parts is economically justified in cases where their fragments or surface layers are worn, or when the surface layer is required to have different properties than the core.
In most cases, surface layers are produced on objects before they are put into operation – these are technological surface layers (TSL). In many cases, operational surface layers (OSL) form on objects during their use.
Currently, there is a growing role for treatments utilizing a concentrated energy beam, which include, among others, electro-spark deposition [1÷5].
The scheme of coating application by electro-spark deposition is shown in Figure 1. (…)
