Open letter from Polish road freight forwarders

Warsaw, 15.12.2010

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The transport industry is often perceived through the prism of traffic jams, collisions, and the poor condition of roads. Recently, opinions have appeared in the media suggesting that the cause of recent traffic difficulties was the so-called “heavy goods vehicles” (TIRs). We have decided to respond to these comments, which not only negatively affect the image of the industry but also depreciate the efforts of drivers striving to deliver essential products to recipients on time, even before the holidays. Increased transport traffic is associated with the peak season in trade occurring at the end of the year, and it means good news for the economy. However, unfavorable weather makes transporting goods difficult. Meanwhile, some media reports blame drivers and their employers, while the real cause of the difficulties is the inadequate preparation of roads for both passenger and freight traffic. Our sector is a litmus test for the economy. Transport influences macroeconomic development – and vice versa. However, this connection is not felt on a daily basis, even though “everyday” logistics concerns everyone: a favorite book brought from a warehouse 300 kilometers away. Tea that arrived at the port of Hamburg from India and then covered the 620 kilometers separating it from the shelf in a local store. Bread that was transported from a nearby bakery so quickly that it reached tables while still warm. Transport is an inseparable element of the economy. A necessary condition for safe and fast delivery, especially in winter, is well-maintained roads. Without transport, passenger car drivers would also have a problem with getting around. Trucks supply fuel to gas stations and deliver salt to road companies, which have recently increased the number of orders. Being aware of the importance of these shipments, we are making efforts to carry out transports despite extreme road conditions. In summary, we would like to assure you that our vehicles are prepared for the current weather conditions, and routes are planned optimally, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. We would like, like everyone else, for the roads to be passable and for gifts to arrive safely and on time.

We wish you a festive break and many unexpected joys.
