Logistics of household municipal solid waste collection

An important issue related to the protection of the natural environment in Poland is the increase in the mass of waste matter – municipal solid waste. At the beginning of the 21st century (in 2002), there were 1,016 regulated landfills operating in Poland. Municipal waste generated in households was also deposited in over 10,000 unregulated – illegal – landfills.
The aforementioned increase in the mass and volume of household municipal solid waste is not only an important issue for the protection of the natural environment, but above all, it is of great importance for the daily functioning of households.

In recent years, a rise in expenditures on food and on the maintenance and operation of dwellings has been observed in a great many of them. The significant share of food expenditures in Polish households mentioned above is identical to that in countries with a lower level of development. Such a situation determines the composition of municipal solid waste, in which various packaging from food products has a significant share. The composition of household municipal solid waste (generated in households) determines the method of its economic utilization. At the same time, it is necessary to point out an important issue, which is the search by large multinational economic entities for new sales markets through the standardization of consumer behavior. In this way, a global model of a consumer with specific behaviors is created. The consumption of standard food products means the generation of waste that contains homogeneous, and therefore economically valuable, secondary raw materials. However, the activities currently being carried out in the field of their recovery should be changed to others, more effective ones, because under the currently functioning system, Poland will likely not meet the applicable recycling levels in the years 2005 – 2007. Modern logistics for the collection of household municipal solid waste should take into account the reduction of costs for every household, as well as the fulfillment of international agreements by Poland.
