The use of wireless sensors is a major achievement in the temperature-controlled supply chain segment for air transport of pharmaceutical products. Generally, safety regulations do not allow the use of active mobile sensors during air transport. However, the company Kuehne + Nagel, together with several airline partners, is testing low-emission devices that can remain active during flight. Thanks to them, the temperature of goods is continuously measured and reported in real time.
Kuehne + Nagel is the first company to introduce such a service for customers in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. In order to guarantee temperature control from the moment of pickup to delivery, warehouses and logistics branches of both Kuehne + Nagel and airline partners will be equipped with transmission technology. The same applies to vehicles transporting the goods. This new service is part of a comprehensive package of tailor-made air freight services offered to the pharmaceutical industry. Full transparency is provided to customers through the online tool KNLogin, where temperature indicators can be checked directly.
– By introducing this service, we are setting new, truly revolutionary standards in the cold chain market for air transport, and we will be introducing these solutions step by step for other industry groups – said Tim Scharwath, Executive Vice President Air Logistics at Kuehne + Nagel International AG.
