Increasing the operational durability of the valve stem – valve guide association in internal combustion engines using laser technology

The results of laboratory tests on a laser-modified surface layer of the bore of a cast-iron valve guide for an internal combustion engine, which operates with a valve stem, are presented. To improve its macro- and micro-geometry, ablative laser micromachining was applied. By using various processing parameters, characteristic oil micro-reservoirs were created in the upper and lower zones of the guide bore. The processing was carried out using an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) with a special focusing system. The topography of the surface shaped by traditional mechanical processing—reaming and honing—was compared with that modified as a result of ablative laser micromachining. To select the optimal parameters for laser micromachining, surface topography studies, analysis of microstructure and chemical composition in micro-areas, and microhardness measurements were conducted.EXPLOATIONAL BOOST DURABILITY OF ELEMENTS ASSOCIATION, VALVE SHAFT – VALVE GUIDE OF COMBUSTION ENGINE
