Half the world in sixteen hours

At the beginning of June, the first Boeing 747-400F completed a round-trip flight from Dubai to Toledo, Ohio, via Frankfurt/Hahn. This new air service by Schenker was introduced in response to the needs of customers in the electronics, automotive, mechanical engineering, and clothing sectors.

Since June 2007, every Saturday, an Emirates Skycargo aircraft departs from Dubai International Airport at 23:30 (local time) for Germany with a cargo load of 110 tons. After a six-hour flight, the plane lands in Hahn, where shipments intended for customers in Europe are offloaded. At the same time, Schenker employees load shipments destined for the United States onto the aircraft. Eight hours later, the plane lands in Toledo, USA. There, it reaches a modern transshipment center belonging to the combined companies Schenker and BAX Global, from where shipments intended for the US market are sent via the Group’s American distribution network. During the return flight, the plane lands in Hahn again (in the morning hours), from where it flies to Dubai, arriving in the afternoon.

– Positive experiences from last year’s direct flights between Hahn and Toledo and the influx of new orders prompted us to offer our customers a connection between Asia, Europe, and America. Thanks to this, the handling of air shipments is entrusted entirely to one operator – stated Dr. Thomas C. Lieb, member of the Schenker AG Board of Management responsible for international air and ocean freight.

The new air connection is a result of Schenker’s logistics offering, which enables the use of various modes of transport on major trade routes. The solution, called SCHENKERskybridge, combines low ocean freight rates on the Asia via Dubai route with the speed of air transport. Compared to transport carried out solely by sea, the time of such combined transport is sometimes up to half as short. Schenker provides this solution between Europe and Asia, as well as for the American market, for goods from Asia to Vancouver.
