Fatigue strength forecasting of an internal combustion engine connecting rod

The paper concerns computer modeling and simulation of the fatigue wear phenomenon of a Honda D14A internal combustion engine connecting rod. Physical, mathematical, and computer models of the fatigue process were developed. An updated Lagrangian incremental description and adequate measures of stress and strain increments were used for modeling. Computer simulations were performed in the ANSYS system. Results for reduced stress, reduced strain, durability, and safety factor were obtained. Fatigue strength forecasting of an internal combustion engine connecting rod can be performed by analyzing the obtained Wöhler curve. The connecting rod is one of the basic parts of a reciprocating internal combustion engine. Its task is to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into the rotary motion of the crankshaft.
The connecting rod is loaded by the inertia forces of moving masses and forces caused by gas pressure exerted on the piston. The main cause of connecting rod failure in internal combustion engines is the effect of material fatigue. During disassembly and verification of connecting rods, it is possible (though not in every case) to determine whether a given part is already fatigue-worn. However, it is practically impossible to determine this during operation. (…)
