Maintaining the continuity of logistics processes is crucial, especially for automotive corporations operating under the just-in-time system. Constant deliveries of components are needed to sustain production. Factories have small reserves of sub-assemblies, which began to run out after a few days of blockage related to the ash cloud. DSV Air&Sea serves one of the automotive industry’s biggest giants – General Motors. The tender that led to the cooperation with GM was the second largest in the industry. One of the deciding factors for the victory was previous positive experience in cooperation – since 2008, DSV has managed the GM spare parts distribution center in West Chester. The new contract is being implemented by DSV companies almost all over the world. Components produced in Europe are shipped to plants in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, as well as GM Daewoo in South Korea. DSV also manages the order system for GM factories in over 30 countries worldwide. In Poland, DSV Air&Sea primarily handles the sea and air export of engines produced by GM subcontractors.
– We must strictly align with GM’s production cycle. For our client, a guarantee of delivery time is extremely important. This requires excellent information flow between employees and constant process improvement – explains Krzysztof Suchodoła, Deputy Managing Director of DSV Air&Sea in Poland.
Such an improvement is undoubtedly the EU Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status obtained by DSV Air&Sea, which significantly shortens customs procedures.
– Serving General Motors is a high prestige for a logistics operator, but also a huge challenge – emphasizes Suchodoła.
