Choosing a Warehouse Management System – Part 2

In the last issue of “Logistyka” we wrote about the criteria for selecting a warehouse management IT system. We presented various options for choosing warehouse solutions based on several basic assumptions, which included: the client’s current IT equipment, the needs regarding the support of processes handled by the warehouse system, and the support of warehouse processes by mobile devices. In this part of the article, we would like to show what factors should be taken into account when implementing an IT system in a warehouse.
The process of creating an IT system is carried out regardless of the size of the implemented software and regardless of the size of the company that begins to use the software.
The process consists of:
1. Analysis of needs, requirements, and problems that should be solved or improved as a result of the design work performed
2. Selection of a solution that would meet the requirements defined in the analysis to a specified extent
3. Detailed analysis after selecting the solution
4. Production or modification of the software for the IT system being launched
5. Implementation of the entire system or modules
6. Testing of the entire system or modules
7. Launching production operations
8. Author’s supervision over the system during the production operation period.
Regardless of the size and scale of the project, a key stage is the analysis of the client’s own needs. Every company, before starting any search for an IT system, should describe its needs and requirements on its own. The analysis should take into account not only the description of main functions, such as time requirements or the number of operations performed by the system, but above all, which is very often overlooked, it should also include a large number of details related to the sequence of executed processes.
The article comes from the magazine “Logistyka” 5/2004.
