The article discusses examples of prototype design solutions enabling variable compression ratio, presented by leading manufacturing companies and research centers. The solutions are based on the design of a traditional spark-ignition internal combustion engine. The presented solutions allow for the introduction of variable compression ratio as an additional control parameter, the value of which can be changed during engine operation across a wide range of loads. The development of piston internal combustion engine design is currently driven mainly by environmental protection requirements. Economic considerations are also of great importance. The desire to meet these requirements by designers of modern engines leads to the emergence of engine system solutions that, until recently, seemed untouchable in their standard form. Variable compression ratio is becoming a control parameter, which to this day, in the vast majority of mass-produced engines, is a constant value resulting from the geometry of the piston system. (…)
