UPS has placed an order for 10 large Airbus A380 aircraft. In doing so, it intends to increase the efficiency of its aviation network to meet the demand resulting from the company’s strong growth in the international shipments segment. In connection with this decision, UPS and Airbus have agreed to adjust a previous order placed for the A300 aircraft.
“The A380 will allow UPS to meet the rapidly growing demands of our customers for cargo transport on many different trade routes” – said John Beystehner, UPS Chief Operating Officer and CEO of UPS Airlines. This aircraft is an excellent combination of payload and range that will help increase both the capacity and efficiency of this international network.
The first A380 aircraft are scheduled to be delivered to UPS in 2009, and the last ones in 2012. The transaction price has not been disclosed, and UPS has not yet selected the engine for the A380 aircraft.
The A380 aircraft can carry three decks of cargo, containing containers with a capacity of over 1,100 cubic meters and a maximum payload of up to 150 tons. Since the range of the A380 is over 10,300 km, it can fly continuously even to those places in the world where more flights were previously required.
