Shelf Ready Packaging (SRP) is a type of secondary packaging designed to allow multiple consumer units to be placed on a store shelf simultaneously without the need for unpacking, facilitating handling, quick product identification within the store, and increasing purchase appeal.
SRP is primarily used for packaging fast-moving consumer goods. The most common forms of these packages include cardboard and plastic trays, cardboard boxes, and plastic crates.
Among the most important benefits that can result from the use of SRP are:
-
improvement of in-store display by linking secondary packaging with unit packaging,
-
higher sales as a result of improved product recognition through clear associative brand creation in the store and guiding the buyer towards the product,
-
increased product recognition by store operational staff, both in the warehouse and on the store shelf,
-
streamlining the shelf-filling process by applying the “one-touch replenishment” principle,
-
increased product availability in the store as a result of increased efficiency of store operational staff,
-
the possibility of reducing expired products,
-
the possibility of reducing product damage.
The presented article presents the opinion of store operational staff and merchandisers on SRP. A survey measurement was used to examine their awareness and knowledge regarding these packages. The study was conducted between December 2008 and April 2009 among 300 randomly selected people. In addition to the demographic section, the interview questionnaire consisted of five extensive questions (open, semi-open, closed, scaled). The survey research was conducted among women and men, in the age range from under 25 to 45 years old, with primary, vocational, and secondary education; working in various types of retail facilities (hypermarkets, supermarkets, discount stores, and local shops) as people stocking store shelves or as merchandisers.
The article comes from the magazine “Logistyka” 4/2009.
