Western European railways are constantly striving to gain new customers and increase their market share. In this process, railways pay particular attention to their energy efficiency, low pollutant emissions, and transport safety.
It is a well-known fact that market needs are not necessarily in conflict with environmental needs. Low environmental impact is something that customers are paying more and more attention to, which is why they often choose rail over other means of transport.
Rail in the environmental space
Although railways are not able to perform every transport task, they have many interesting and significant advantages when it comes to adapting transport to environmental protection needs. Compared to road transport, railways are more efficient in terms of energy consumption. Steel wheels rolling on rails overcome less rolling resistance and are characterized by lower energy loss compared to other means of transport.
