DHL with the orchestra

DHL, the official logistics partner of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, is once again responsible for transporting over 100 instruments during this year’s European concert tour. Six tons of heavy cargo include full equipment, ranging from music stands, stools, and cabinets, to the conductor’s baton.

DHL with the orchestra

The Gewandhaus Orchestra, led by Riccardo Chailly, performed at the first symphonic concert of the year at the Vatican, organized on the occasion of Pope Benedict XVI’s birthday on April 20th. This performance inaugurated the orchestra’s tour, which includes 20 European cities by the end of 2012. Throughout the entire concert tour, the Gewandhaus Orchestra will be accompanied by the leading global logistics specialist, DHL.

– We have focused all our technological expertise on transporting the unique musical instruments of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. For this project, we are using vehicles with air suspension, special covers for temperature-sensitive items, as well as constant temperature control in the cargo space and real-time monitoring via the ‘track and trace’ system. In this way, we guarantee the client that these unique instruments will reach concert halls in Europe and America on time and in pristine condition – explains Vincenzo Scrudato, Managing Director of DHL Trade Fairs & Events, a unit of DHL Freight.

Logistical planning for a concert tour of this scale can take up to eighteen months. This undertaking requires the development of a precise schedule that must be strictly followed. For every transport order, DHL assigns two drivers with whom constant contact is maintained. To limit the impact of external factors, traffic and weather conditions are constantly monitored. If necessary, DHL will also provide aircraft for special deliveries.

– DHL provides us with exactly what we require – completely safe and reliable transport of our equipment. With logistical support from Bonn by our side, we can fully concentrate on our musical performances – says Gewandhaus Director, Professor Andreas Schulz.
