The initiative enables young people entering the professional world to complete internships at renowned companies or organizations.
UPS officially joined the project at the beginning of February 2012. As part of the program, students and graduates of fields related to logistics and forwarding applied for an internship at the company. The organizers received nearly 2,400 internship applications addressed to all internship sponsors. One intern will be selected from the candidates who applied to UPS. The winner’s name will be announced during a gala ceremony to be held on June 13, 2012, in Warsaw.
– We want to provide the competition winner with the opportunity to confront the theoretical knowledge gained at university with practice in logistics operations. The intern we select will have the chance to gain experience in a corporate environment and learn about the specifics of UPS’s business operations – says Magdalena Blechoska, HR Director at UPS.
From the very beginning, the winner will have the opportunity to directly observe and actively participate in the operations of a complex network through which UPS delivers shipments from point A to point B around the world. The intern will also learn about the principles of how sorting facilities and operational units function, as well as how UPS operates in an international environment. The second stage will involve work in a specialized unit dealing with the organization of freight transport via sea freight.
– Our intention is to present the winner with a holistic vision of our operations. Part of working in the field of logistics is the ability to plan complex processes, as well as to anticipate and react to changing trends. This is extremely important in the process of learning all aspects of the business being conducted – added Magdalena Blechoska.
The candidate for the internship should have a relevant education and basic knowledge in the field of logistics, mainly in the area of sea freight. They should also possess the traits that UPS considers essential in the logistics industry.
– A sense of professional customer service should be a key factor for people looking for work at UPS – said Magdalena Blechoska. – Additionally, a candidate wishing to work in our company should be open to new challenges and expanding their knowledge. Teamwork skills, diligence, discipline, activity, and a desire to constantly seek new areas of professional development and process improvement are also important.
As a service company, UPS believes that people are the best resources of an enterprise, and the constant development of employees is part of the organizational culture and operational strategy. The company’s policy is based on internal recruitment, and management positions are usually filled by employees hired at UPS. In many cases, senior managers started working at the company from the lowest levels, very often while still studying.
