MobileCom Day 2011 – event report

June 29th is the day of mobile technologies – an event organized globally by the GS1 organization, which also met with great interest in our local market. The Institute of Logistics and Warehousing set itself the goal of creating a platform for exchanging experiences for all market representatives – manufacturers, distributors, application and solution providers interested in building reference sources of product information. Presentations at MobileCom Day confirmed the need for such meetings and the high level of corporate engagement in the area of mobile solutions.

The meeting began with a webinar prepared by GS1 Global for Europe and Africa, during which CapGemini presented the results of a report titled “Beyond the Label: Providing Digital Information Consumers Can Trust”. Mobile market trends in Poland and worldwide were presented by Michał Wiśniewski, R&D Director of the Allegro Group. He emphasized that the driving force behind the domestic mobile revolution is the growing access to the Internet via 3G. He also presented interesting research from the group, which illustrates the high growth dynamics in the use of mobile applications on iOS (iPhone and iPad), Android, Symbian, and Windows Mobile platforms within the Allegro Group services.

The second presentation advocated for photo-shopping of books and multimedia. Thanks to the SaveUp.pl application, we will not forget about a planned purchase. It is enough to take a photo of a product with a mobile phone to be able to buy it or find its digital equivalent, e.g., an ebook in the case of books – explained Arkadiusz Skuza.

The potential of mobile technologies has already been appreciated by KAMIS SA, which, together with the Institute of Logistics and Warehousing, implemented a pilot functionality of the MOBIT-GS1 application consisting of providing multimedia content (recipes) for a specific KAMIS product (e.g., Gyros seasoning). According to Łukasz Śliwiński from KAMIS, by offering the consumer access to reliable product information and multimedia, the manufacturer receives, in addition to enhancing the brand image, an innovative channel for establishing cooperation with a specific user of KAMIS products.

MobileCom Day has come to an end. But it gave rise to a new working group focused on creating product description standards for web and mobile applications. The inaugural meeting of the group was attended by several dozen representatives of companies interested in building reference sources of product information based on GS1 barcodes.
