New air freight hub in Frankfurt

DB Schenker has unveiled a new European air freight hub at Frankfurt Airport. The ceremony was attended by a large group of representatives from the worlds of politics and business. The hub will begin operations at the beginning of August this year. Import and export branches, which currently operate in various locations, will be merged into a single branch at the airport. Fifty million euros have been invested in the project.

– This European hub represents a significant turning point in the international air transport of our network. It will strengthen our global competitive position – emphasized Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, Member of the Management Board of DB Mobility Logistics AG, responsible for the Transport and Logistics Division.
– The new facility is a clear signal that we are looking to the future even in difficult times – stated Dr. Thomas C. Lieb, CEO of Schenker AG, responsible for Global Air and Ocean Freight. – We are preparing to meet the future needs of our customers and are increasing the efficiency of our equipment and systems.

In the future, shipments for global industrial and commercial customers will be consolidated, temporarily stored, and processed for further transport on the ground floor of CargoCity Süd – a logistics center with an area of 15,000 square meters. The first floor of the center provides nearly 10,000 square meters of space for aviation spare parts. The center also offers offices for approximately 200 employees on two floors, with a total area of 4,000 square meters.

The hall on the top floor was built without columns to allow for the storage of large-sized parts. Heavy loads from outside the building are moved to the first floor using a crane. State-of-the-art X-ray equipment, cold storage technology for goods requiring controlled temperatures, separate rooms for hazardous materials, as well as a system for the consolidation and deconsolidation of air pallets and containers, make the Frankfurt hub one of the most modern and efficient in the DB Schenker international network.
