Summary of 2008 in the TSL industry

We invite you to read the report summarizing the year 2008 in the TSL industry in Poland.

The report was prepared by a team of analysts from Apreo Logistics SA.
The past year in the Polish TSL industry cannot be considered one of the best. The disparity between the supply of transport services and the demand for them led to a destructive price war. Towards the end of the year, the market felt the effects of the economic slowdown, and in November—traditionally one of the best months—worse results were recorded than in previous years. A characteristic feature of Polish transport companies is becoming the multi-week transit of goods across Europe, with which carriers compensate for lower rates per kilometer. Apreo Logistics—a freight forwarder and service provider in Poland and Europe, managing a fleet of over 500 vehicles—decided to summarize the past year based on its own statistical data.
Poland’s central position on the map of Europe favors the development of the TSL industry in our country. In recent years, the influx of foreign investment has caused even faster progress in transport and logistics. It is estimated that this sector of the economy currently accounts for almost 5 percent of the generated GDP.
Data from Apreo shows that an upward trend in the number of transported loads was noticeable from the beginning of the year. The culmination of the number of transported loads occurred in October. Seasonality prevails in Polish transport; for this reason, more goods are transported in September, October, and November than in other months. This is a trend observed for many years, occurring in virtually all European economies. Increased production after the holiday season and before the holidays is reflected in increased demand for transport services. This year, the peak falls mainly in October, while in November, due to pre-crisis tension and a smaller number of working days (the so-called “calendar effect”), the number of transports decreases. In previous years, November was usually the record-breaking month.
The largest number of loads sets off from the Łódź Voivodeship. Its location in the center of Poland means that a large number of transport companies are based in this region, and modern warehouse space is increasing here year by year. An important role is also played by the fact that many factories have recently been built in the region. In the Łódź Special Economic Zone, giants such as Dell and Gillette, among others, manufacture their products.
The Masovian and Silesian Voivodeships occupy the next two positions in the ranking, primarily due to the proximity of large agglomerations and absorbent sales markets.
The most frequent destination for transported loads is the Masovian Voivodeship. Nearly one in four transports in Poland goes primarily to Warsaw and its surroundings. In second place in this classification is the Silesian Voivodeship, which is the recipient of half as many transports as Masovia. The top three is closed by the Łódź Voivodeship, which is the leader in terms of loading goods.
