Responsibility for a disaster lies with the rack manufacturer and the facility management. The editors of “Logistyka” do not recommend prioritizing cost as the most important factor when choosing a warehouse design. A correct design and proper operation save the health and lives of employees, which cannot be estimated in monetary terms. Therefore, in the fifth article of our series on safety, we present the most important elements that must be considered when choosing a warehouse design and its equipment.
“Reduction” of the rack structure
No manufacturer or supplier of pallet and block racks has yet created a design that would fully meet the requirements for stacking and retrieving improperly formed load units (pallets, crates). When designing, only the effect of a relatively small horizontal force on the rack is assumed, for example: Current calculation results for the structure of typical racks are based on historical development and prove to be economically justified and carry a low risk of failure when the following conditions are met:
The above requirements refer to European and national legal acts regarding occupational health and safety, as well as to the recommendations of the European Federation of Materials Handling (Federation Europeenne de la Manutention) FEM 10.2.03, FEM 10.2.04, and FEM 10.3.01.
