Marking with RFID tags is a very tempting technology. The property of identifying objects without direct line-of-sight entices every logistics professional.IT system managers are enticed by the read/write attribute, which creates realistic dreams of databases distributed by objects. Furthermore, RFID, being a semiconductor-based technology, promises cost reductions. The attractiveness of RFID technology is accompanied by a number of significant technical and business issues that must be considered before designing an application. Users and integrators must decide on one of the available frequencies, memory configuration, and interface protocol, not to mention such basic matters as tag housing and programming. Table 1 presents the technical properties of RFID and the benefits of their application. Such benefits are impossible to achieve effectively using other automatic identification techniques. When making the decision to implement RFID, one must consider how much achieving the goal is worth.
