Television is one of the fastest media. Footage is usually broadcast on the same day it is filmed, so the ability to make split-second decisions, analytical thinking, and well-functioning logistics for television news production are essential for the efficient operation of the Teleskop newsroom.
Teleskop is a daily news magazine broadcast in the Greater Poland and Lubusz provinces. In the past year, it received an award in the news program category during the European regional television competition in Italy – “Prix Circom Regional 2003”. This was not the first award for Teleskop. Two years earlier, it won second prize from the European Association of Regional Television Broadcasters. According to the results of studies by the Quality of Life Center at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Teleskop is the main source of information about local events for 90% of the residents of Greater Poland.
The dynamics of “news”
Editorial work begins with a morning meeting attended by reporters, the editor, and the production manager. Reporters present the news topics they plan to prepare that day. These are primarily stories concerning the capital of Greater Poland, which are closest to the local viewer. At the same time, topics that have arrived at the newsroom via fax or email are distributed. The Teleskop newsroom does not have as rigid a structure of thematic segments as Gazecie Poznańska (“Logistyka” 3/2003, p. 33), so individual news topics are taken up by journalists who are free at that moment.
After all announcements are submitted, including those from regional centers, the editor compiles the so-called “rundown,” which is the plan for the upcoming edition of Teleskop. Every day, 20-30 “news” items are created, each not exceeding 1.5 minutes.
– A news program must be dynamic – explains Ryszard Ćwirlej, head of Teleskop – That is why we make short but comprehensive reports on the latest events in the city.
During this time, reporters place orders for a camera and also state the time they need for travel and gathering material. The production manager is responsible for creating the task schedule for camera operators.
