Urban Logistics – 4th Student Scientific Conference

Bicycle. Car. Tram. Truck. Motorcycle. All these vehicles participate in urban traffic. How to make them move smoothly, without traffic jams, and reach their destination quickly – these were some of the topics discussed at the 4th Student Scientific Conference “Urban Logistics” at the Poznań School of Logistics (November 29-30, 2007).

The conference was opened by Ph.D. Eng. Andrzej Krych from the Poznań University of Technology, who spoke about congestion in Poznań’s public transport, i.e., the popular “traffic jams”. Immediately after him, an interesting lecture titled “Oversized Loads Through the City” was delivered by Kacper Szewczyk, chairman of the “CorLog” Student Scientific Logistics Circle at the WSL. Participants learned how oversized cargo is transported through the city and how traffic is blocked and controlled during these complex logistical operations. The speaker combined the daily practice of a convoy pilot with an interesting presentation, which resulted in him being showered with a barrage of questions. Some participants began to think about linking this profession to their own future.

Logisticians from the Katowice University of Economics showed everyone modern communication solutions in the Upper Silesian conurbation. In the future, these will help solve public transport problems in that region.

An interesting project was presented by WSL student Szymon Świekatowski. He presented the results of research conducted last year regarding communication solutions for transporting Lech Poznań fans to matches. The research showed in which areas and at what time fans gather before Lech matches. Based on an in-depth analysis of public transport, the student developed a project for improvements. Thanks to it, fans could travel to and from matches more efficiently, and Poznań residents would experience less discomfort during that time.

The “star”, as logisticians popularly call him, was the annual guest of the conference – Jacek Walkowiak from the Gniezno Bus Enthusiasts Club. His humorous way of lecturing and rather controversial ideas regarding the construction of transfer points in Gniezno’s public transport caused a great stir and smiles on many faces. The speaker is a specialist in communication solutions in many cities, and he knows the Gniezno PKP timetable by heart. His extraordinary personality makes Jacek Walkowiak welcomed with great enthusiasm every year.

Students from the Dialog circle at the University of Economics in Katowice presented a modern concept for implementing a multimodal travel system into urban logistics. Thanks to it, transport efficiency can be increased by combining the transport of people and goods using various means of transport, starting from city trains, through buses and trams, and ending with bicycles.

– We are very pleased with the conference, which enjoys increasing interest every year – said Wojciech Zalewski, press spokesperson for the Poznań School of Logistics. – Students have once again proven that they are able to organize a scientific conference at the highest level, which was emphasized by many participants.

The organizer of the annual conferences dedicated to urban logistics is the “CorLog” Student Scientific Logistics Circle of the WSL.
