Logistics processes of an open-pit mine

The author of the study presents a logistics solution in a specific enterprise, which is an open-pit mine – the “Adamów” Lignite Mine, conducting business activities in the vicinity of Turek. Characteristic of this type of mining enterprise are the transport subsystems used throughout the entire production process, especially belt conveyors and industrial railways. In the field of transport, the phenomenon of scale is clearly visible, which gives transport processes a special dimension.
The “Adamów” Lignite Mine is one of four mines extracting lignite. The name of the mine is synonymous with the name of Prof. Adam Patla, who was the discoverer of lignite deposits in the vicinity of the town of Turek.
The “Adamów” Lignite Basin is located in central Poland, 33 km from Konin, 40 km from Kalisz, and 75 km from Łódź. The operational capabilities of the lignite deposit resources are estimated until 2023. The extracted coal comes from the Miocene epoch (20 million years ago), has a calorific value of approx. 1600-
2400 kcal/kg, an ash content in the working state of approx. 140%, and an average combustible sulfur content of 0.2%. The extracted coal is intended to supply power plants, and only a small part of it is suitable for briquetting. It should be added that power plants fueled by lignite generate about 40% of the total amount of electricity produced in Poland annually. The electricity generated in this way is about 30% cheaper than in power plants fueled by hard coal. Average overburden thickness –
41.7 m, average coal seam thickness approx. 5.3 m. This means that mining operations are carried out at a depth of approx. 50 m. The “Adamów” Lignite Mine extracts about 4.5 to 5 million tons of lignite annually from three operating open-pit mines: “Adamów”, “Władysławów”, and “Koźmin”. The location and distribution directions of the lignite are illustrated by the situational map below.
