Restructuring of logistics service enterprises

The paper was presented at the Polish Logistics Congress “Logistics 2000 – Meeting the logistics challenges of the 21st century”. Poznań, June 1-2, 2000.

Introduction
In the Polish language, restructuring is a completely new concept and, as a keyword, does not appear in many contemporary dictionary and encyclopedic publications. According to the Dictionary of Foreign Words [13], restructuring, identified with restructuralization, means: “a change in the structure of something, especially the economic structure of a country or the structure of an enterprise.” According to the New Universal Encyclopedia [9], the concept of economic restructuring is closely linked to the systemic transformation of the Polish economy.
According to C. Suszyński [15], restructuring is: “a complex process of significant, often fundamental changes in an enterprise, the goal of which is the current (operational) and long-term (strategic) shaping of the attributes of its subjectivity in terms of changes in the environment and the internal needs of the enterprise itself.” In the work edited by J. Kwaśniewski [8], we find the following understanding of the term: restructuring is the organizational, economic, and technical adaptation of an enterprise that best corresponds to the goal set before it. Restructuring in this sense aims to improve the competitive position of the enterprise by reducing its operating costs and adapting its technology to market requirements.

Based on the above review of definitions, the author of the article proposes the following understanding of the concept of restructuring: a comprehensive reconstruction of an enterprise in all its areas and spheres of activity, aimed at a measurable improvement in the enterprise’s performance and the achievement of a better competitive position.
Logistics service enterprises (English: logistic service providers) should be understood as enterprises providing a wide spectrum of logistics services, including: transport and freight forwarding of goods, warehousing and inventory management, organization of loading, unloading, and transshipment of goods related to shipment consolidation, planning and scheduling of transport, and customs clearance.

It should be emphasized that in Polish conditions – the formation of the logistics services market – there are still few enterprises providing a full range of logistics services. Therefore, in this study, logistics enterprises providing a selected, limited range of services will be analyzed.

The article will present the course and results of the restructuring process of three enterprises carrying out the following range of logistics services:
• Enterprise A – import, warehousing, and distribution of spare parts for cars;
• Enterprise B – production, warehousing, and distribution of cleaning agents, cosmetics, and detergents;
• Enterprise C – organization and implementation of the city cleaning process.
