Optimizing delivery size in a spreadsheet

In enterprises, there is very often a need to perform calculations that are not always possible within the functional scope of the company’s existing IT system. In such cases, it is often possible to resort to the capabilities of a spreadsheet, e.g., Lotus, Excel, or another. In this short article, I would like to show how one can use the capabilities of a spreadsheet to determine the optimal delivery size, i.e., the size that minimizes inventory costs.
Preparation
Before we proceed to the calculations in the spreadsheet, let’s create a new workbook named logistics. We can do this in three steps.
1. Launch the spreadsheet by double-clicking the spreadsheet icon on the desktop or by clicking Start in the bottom-left corner of the monitor, selecting programs from the list, and then clicking the name of the spreadsheet, in our case Excel.
2. In the File command group located in the upper part of the Excel interface, click New.
3. The final stage of creation is naming the workbook, which we do by entering the File command group and selecting the Save As command. After launching this command by clicking, a form appears where you can enter a name, in our case it will be “logistics”. You can also, among other things, set the workbook location and type here.
The workbook created in this way has three sheets by default: Sheet 1, Sheet 2, Sheet 3, which are graphically presented as tabs in the bottom-left corner of the sheet.
By double-clicking on the name Sheet 1, we can enter our own name. I suggest it be “EWD”. The same should be done with the name Sheet 2 and change it to WD.
The article comes from the magazine “Logistyka” 1/2003.
