The benefits of implementing such a system include, among others, better awareness of key environmental issues among company employees, increased efficiency in the use of energy and raw materials by the company, and confirmation of compliance with environmental regulations.
Even in the initial phase of implementing the WEEE Directive (Directive 2002/96/EC Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), Wincanton became a leader in the electrical and electronic equipment recycling industry. This was made possible through cooperation with many retailers and manufacturers, as well as the implementation of compliance programs aimed at preparing companies for the directive’s entry into force in July of this year. In February of last year, Wincanton opened the first large-scale electrical and electronic equipment disposal facility in the UK, investing over £4.5 million in the Billingham plant. It is currently capable of processing over 100,000 tons of waste equipment of this type annually.
