Information on EPC technology has already been presented in “Logistyka”, including issues 1/2004 and 4/2004. This article opens a series of articles concerning data standards recorded in the EPC tag.
In the electronic data carrier, which is the EPC (Electronic Product Code) tag, only an identification number will be recorded. It will be one of the following data standards:
– SGTIN
– SSCC
– SGLN
– GRAI
– GIAI
– GID.
The above list shows that the EPC identification number contains existing, key EAN.UCC numbers, with the exception of the last one – GID (General Identifier), which is independent of all known, existing specifications or identification schemes.
This article will present the first of these standards in more detail, namely SGTIN. In EPC tags, an identification number based on GTIN, abbreviated as SGTIN (Serialized Global Trade Identification Number), will be recorded. Since GTIN only identifies the type of product and does not individually identify each product, an individual number has been added to the GTIN in the EPC tag to achieve this capability. In this way, it is possible to identify, for example, every can of Coca-Cola, every pair of trousers, etc.
The article comes from the magazine “Logistyka” 6/2004.
