Observing the development of EPC/RFID technology and the interest it generates among its potential and direct users, one might get the impression that in a few years’ time, the traditional method of barcode reading, as one of many ADC (Automatic Data Capture) techniques, will give way to a new, more efficient technology.
In order to develop RFID/EPC technology, as well as to expand its capabilities for potential users, the implementation of a project co-financed by European Union funds, called BRIDGE (The Building Radio frequency IDentification solutions for the Global Environment), began on July 1, 2006. The BRIDGE project was initiated in response to a call launched in May 2005 under the European Union Information Society Technologies (IST) area, in accordance with the “Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area” program of the 6th Framework Programme.
Coordinated by GS1, a global data standardization organization, the BRIDGE project brought together 31 global organizations into a consortium. The program involves universities in Europe and China, three Auto-ID laboratories, solution providers – both smaller and larger companies – as well as large retail chains, manufacturers, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Among the companies participating in the project are: Carrefour, Bénédicta, Kaufhof, Gardeur, Nestlé UK, Sony, El Corte Inglés, SAP, Confidex, Cetecom, UPM Raflatac, Verisign UK, Unisys. – Since its introduction, RFID technology has been perceived as a panacea for a more sophisticated and efficient global
supply chain. However, before this happens, many questions must be answered – said Henri Barthel, Technical Director of EPCglobal and coordinator of the BRIDGE project. – The participation of representatives from many sectors in the project is a guarantee of its success.
The BRIDGE project will transform RFID from an identification technology into a product information network based on EPCglobal.
The BRIDGE project will transform RFID from an identification technology into a product information network based on EPCglobal.
The project consists of 3 groups of issues, focused on business, technical, and so-called horizontal activities, which concern the dissemination of knowledge about EPCglobal and the provision of tools supporting the adaptation of the new technology in the market.
