Here is a portion of further questions troubling GS1 System participants, along with answers, of course. This time they concern GLN numbers.
I am a participant in the GS1 System and I mark my products with barcodes. Can I create Global Location Numbers?
No. Numbers identifying goods (GTIN) are created based on the so-called company prefix. This is a 4-, 5-, 6-, or 7-digit number, which forms the basis for creating several global numbers:
• for identifying trade items – GTIN-13 and GTIN-14
• for identifying logistic units – SSCC
• for identifying individual assets and returnable assets – GRAI and GIAI
• for identifying service relations – GSRN.
On the other hand, the GS1 Global Location Number (GLN), identifying a formal-legal, functional, or physical location, is created from the so-called company number (different from the company prefix). This requires the GS1 System participant in Poland to submit an appropriate application to ILiM – GS1 Poland, fill out the relevant application form, and pay the appropriate fee. The detailed procedure can be found on the website:

What is the structure of the Global Location Number (GLN)?
The Global Location Number (GLN) always consists of 13 digits with the following structure:
• GS1 national organization number (for ILiM – the Polish national organization, it is “590”),
• company number (important – in Poland, this is a different number than the company prefix!!!),
• location reference – assigned by the company for a specific location,
• check digit – calculated based on a uniform algorithm established internationally by GS1.
