IT systems in logistics companies during the transformation period – part 1

During the transformation period, the scope and operating environment of logistics companies change fundamentally. If we assume that transformation means the transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy, and that this transition is accompanied by a wide range of reforms, then changing the operating principles of logistics companies must be considered necessary.
The situation in the sector is influenced by specific groups of factors. The first group includes implemented reforms, which cover the liberalization of trade, price deregulation, and privatization. As a result, domestic and foreign competition increases. Furthermore, there is an increase in requirements regarding quality, punctuality, and cost reduction. At the same time, the ongoing changes are subject to an IT and communication revolution, as well as strong pressure to satisfy social needs. The consequence is an increase in business risk. Only those entities that are able to develop an offer that is optimal from the customer’s point of view and implement it properly remain on the market.
The purpose of this article is to present the impact of the information system on the operations of logistics enterprises operating during the transformation period. It is assumed that an appropriate information system facilitates the adoption of the right strategy and leads to achieving a competitive advantage.
Taking into account the scope and pace of changes during the transformation period, there are three basic types of market niches:
– monopolistic
– free market
– contestable.
The first refers to the principles occurring in a shortage economy. Thanks to institutional solutions, the enterprise has a privileged position on the market, limits competition access, and defines the framework for cooperation.
The article comes from the magazine “Logistyka” No. 3/2005.
