Inauguration of logisticians

A new faculty, a new banner, and soon a new field of study. On top of that, a record number of applicants. It is no wonder that the authorities of the College of Logistics have reasons to be satisfied. The first logistics university in Poland has ceremoniously inaugurated another, the sixth in the history of WSL, academic year.

The ceremony took place on Saturday, October 7, 2006. The auditorium of the College of Logistics was filled with distinguished guests – personalities from the worlds of science and business. The inauguration was graced by the rectors of foreign universities cooperating with WSL – TFH Wildau from Germany and the College of Logistics (Vysoká Škola Logistiky) from the Czech Republic.

In his opening remarks, Rector Prof. Andrzej Korzeniowski emphasized that the university’s mission, which is to educate future logistics elites for our economy, will be continued. During the ceremony, the university’s partners presented the school’s newly funded banner. The setting for this act was very impressive. Each of the founders approached the banner to drive in a symbolic nail, and after it was handed over to the Rector, the Gaude Mater Polonia resounded in the auditorium.

Immediately after this, the Matriculation Act of first-year students took place. Nearly 1,100 new students began their studies at the College of Logistics, which is a record number in the history of the university. During the inauguration, awards were presented to outstanding students as well as teaching and administrative staff. The inaugural lecture, “Risk and crises in 21st-century logistics,” was delivered by Dr. Eng. Wojciech Machowiak.

The 2006/2007 academic year began with 2,495 students, including 1,920 in bachelor’s degree programs and 575 in supplementary master’s degree programs. Adapting the university’s structure to current needs, the Faculty of Management and Logistics was established, which will provide education in two fields. The first of these is management. – We are already prepared to launch the second field – logistics. We are waiting for the decision of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education – says the university’s press spokesperson, Wojciech Zalewski – WSL will be the first and only university in Poland to offer a degree in Logistics.

In the past academic year, the College of Logistics achieved significant results in many areas of operation. The university’s human resources potential grew, research and publishing activities were developed, the number of students increased, and study conditions improved significantly. WSL grants academic and sports scholarships, as well as social scholarships, for both full-time and part-time students. This year, in cooperation with the company Prologis, the tradition of awarding prizes for the best diploma theses has become a permanent part of the university’s life. An electronic lending library was also launched, and the possibility of reserving and ordering books through the Student Internet Platform was created.

The WSL authorities recognize the very important role of international contacts and cooperation. The past academic year was a period of intensive work in this direction. As a result of establishing cooperation with TFH Wildau from Berlin, an exchange of both staff and students was introduced. At the end of last year, the so-called ECTS credit transfer system was introduced, which opens the way for students to have their studies credited at partner universities. Together with European partners, WSL is implementing the pilot project NEDLOG – “Modern Education for Logistics,” which will soon allow for studying logistics via the Internet. The European Commission, as part of the EU Socrates program, awarded the university the Erasmus Charter, allowing for the expansion of contacts with European universities.

The College of Logistics has signed cooperation agreements with domestic manufacturing, distribution, IT, and logistics companies, as well as institutions and schools. All this is to help students organize interesting and effective internships beyond theoretical knowledge. The university attaches great importance to practice. Supervisors strive to ensure that their students’ diploma theses have concrete market value. An example is the company Kuehne und Nagel, for which WSL students completed a series of works that together form a project for the modernization of the company’s warehouses. This will allow for the introduction of many logistics improvements.

The Student Government and two scientific circles are actively operating at the university. The annual bowling tournament for the Rector’s Cup of the College of Logistics has become a permanent fixture in the sporting life of the city of Poznań. The event enjoys great interest, gathering teams from almost all Poznań universities at the start. The WSL Academic Sports Association is also actively functioning.
