A consortium of 31 global organizations supported by the European Commission is launching a 3-year research and development project
in the field of RFID. A three-year initiative dedicated to research and development activities, training, and demonstrations regarding the effective use of RFID based on EPCglobal standards has been initiated in Brussels.
The BRIDGE project (The Building Radio frequency IDentification solutions for the Global Environment) is supported by the EU’s Sixth Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration (FP6) with an amount of 7.5 million euros. Coordinated by the global data standardization organization, GS1, the BRIDGE project brings together 31 global organizations into a consortium. Participants in the program include universities in Europe and China along with three Auto-ID laboratories, solution providers (both smaller and larger companies), as well as large retail chains, manufacturers, and small and medium-sized enterprises. “Since its introduction, RFID technology has been perceived
as a panacea for a more sophisticated and efficient global supply chain. However, before this happens, many questions must be answered,” said Henri Barthel, Technical Director of EPCglobal and coordinator of the BRIDGE project. “The participation of representatives
from many sectors is a guarantee of its success. The BRIDGE project will transform RFID from an identification technology into a product information network based on EPCglobal,” he added.
