Mobile racking – a trend or a saving

As a result of economic development following Poland’s accession to the EU, the demand for warehouse space has increased, as have the prices of land for development in attractive locations along major transport routes. One of the solutions to reduce investment costs related to the purchase of a plot of land is the use of high-bay storage technology in newly built warehouses, utilizing high-lift trucks. The application of this technology allows for:
− placing the required stock in a smaller warehouse area,
− reducing employment costs, but it requires higher expenditures on technological equipment and higher qualifications from internal transport equipment operators.
Table 1 presents possible storage technologies in frame racks along with the types of internal transport equipment used to service the racks.
The main criteria for choosing the technology are:
− cargo flow parameters,
− goods rotation,
− physical parameters of stored goods,
− picking structure,
− number of assortments in goods turnover,
− investment outlays,
− operating costs.
One of the technologies that can be used in a new warehouse is storage in mobile pallet frame racks. This technology is based on the use of pallet frame racks mounted on carriages moving along rails permanently installed in the warehouse floor (photo 1 and photo 2). The number of rails depends on the number of rack columns in a rack row and the assumed load of the rack columns. The spreading of rack rows is carried out by means of geared motors driving the carriage drive rollers, allowing for the movement of both a single rack row and several rows simultaneously. The control of the rack row spreading can be done manually by pressing a button on the front of the rack row or automatically using radio waves.
