Transshipment terminals and the development of intermodal transport

The integration of transport systems requires the development of international systems connected into a single network with high cargo flow capacity. Intermodal transport, which combines rail, road, and sea transport while maintaining a single form of cargo, has been discussed for quite some time. Supporting the development of intermodal transport and terminals suggests that there will be a reduction in road freight transport, which not only leads to the destruction of road infrastructure but also causes increased exhaust emissions and, consequently, leads to the degradation of the natural environment. Therefore, there is a need to curb the trend of increasing reliance on road transport in favor of intermodal transport.
The link between different systems is a terminal properly adapted for efficient transshipment, i.e., a point located on intermodal transport routes where transshipment to other means of transport or storage of loading units takes place.
Terminals are an opportunity for the development of intermodal transport, as they can be a key element in optimizing logistics networks in terms of forecasted cargo flows. In logistics processes, the success of the entire intermodal transport chain depends on the proper functioning of terminals, their transshipment capacity and efficiency, as well as the range of services offered. The organization of road transport operations plays a significant role in the capabilities and efficiency of an IT (intermodal terminal). The arrival of road vehicles depends on train schedules, terminal operating hours, and the market.
