At the port in Hamburg, Schenker has used radio frequency identification (RFID) technology for containers for the first time.
Test phases for the new technology were started simultaneously in Hamburg and Hong Kong. The goal of the tests is the final verification of the effectiveness of the RFID system in managing global supply chains based on sea transport. Containers equipped with the test device will be used on shuttle routes between Hamburg and Hong Kong.
– The RFID tag is used to improve supply chain transparency – stated Dr. Wolfgang Dräger, Schenker’s Vice President for Sea Freight. – We are doing pioneering work for our customers in sea transport, especially in the area of less-than-container-load (LCL) shipments.
The new technology means significantly greater shipment security and the ability to check their status and position at any point in every link of the supply chain. The tag will be automatically registered at points where responsibility for the shipment is transferred. This means that the shipment will be immediately visible at all control points of the transport chain.
The first phase of tests begins with partners at port packing stations. The next stage will also include container terminals. Schenker will also test the so-called “e-seal,” an electronic seal documenting all instances of opening and closing the container, as well as many other security devices designed to maintain total control over the shipment throughout the entire transport chain.
