Not everyone can advise – part 2

An entrepreneur can solve a “logistical problem” without the support of consultants, but then they rely solely on their own knowledge and experience, usually related to the same industry, which largely excludes the possibility of assessing the situation from a broader perspective. Independent consulting firms, in close cooperation with the client, on one hand, use their cross-sectional experience, and on the other, combine it with the client’s expert knowledge about the specifics of the industry and logistics in their company. In this way, unique and most effective solutions are developed together.

When buying ready-made logistics concepts, one must reckon with certain limitations. The client can only choose systems that are currently in the given supplier’s offer. Therefore, such a solution cannot be fully tailored to the needs of a given company. In contrast, independent consulting firms reach for solutions from various sources and choose the most optimal ones from them. Moreover, they take full responsibility for the proposals presented at the consulting stage. Thanks to this, in addition to objective optimization, they enable saving time and resources as well as minimizing risk, which in effect translates into financial and organizational benefits. However, such unconventional solutions cost a lot and not every enterprise can afford them, which is why professional consulting and design services are generally reserved for larger ones. With a large scale of operations, the effects of the advisor’s work are quickly visible, and every improvement quickly yields measurable financial results.

On the other hand, small companies that could function more effectively thanks to the advice of professionals often care about quick and measurable benefits and therefore do not use such services. Logistics consulting offered to companies most often covers strategic, tactical, and operational areas. The first one involves analyses, models, and concepts of the entire supply chain – from procurement, through production, to distribution. In turn, tactical and operational activities contribute to the realization of assumed strategic goals. At these levels, experienced professionals advise on how to most effectively manage individual elements of the integrated supply chain.

In times when companies are cutting costs and are reluctant to spend money, interest in strategic consulting services is growing. Advisors of all kinds – including logistics ones – are not always welcome at the doors of potential clients during such a period. However, many companies are starting to think more strategically, realizing that making a bold decision to re-analyze the supply chain and optimize it, precisely during a period of stagnation, can distinguish them most from the competition. Then, the most popular is a logistics audit, which, for example, identifies bottlenecks in logistics processes, optimizes the supply chain, distribution networks, or inventory management.

During periods of prosperity, companies invest more, building, among other things, new facilities. At this time, the demand for conceptual designs of warehouses, tenders for logistics equipment, and professional implementation management increases. Companies that decide to use the services of a consulting firm in the field of logistics should, above all, be prepared for full cooperation, openness, and trust. Without this, the project will always end in failure.

The essence of logistics consulting is cooperation with the client – the advisor provides know-how and practical experience from many projects, the client provides knowledge about the specifics of the enterprise and its operations.
Besides, enterprises that operate on a smaller scale should arm themselves with more patience, because logistics concepts generally bring benefits over a longer period than the clients themselves would like, which is why it must always be a carefully analyzed and calculated decision.
